The extent of my injuries

It could have been much worse. If you look at the damage sustained by my gear, you’d know that my injuries could have been much worse. All my gear took serious damage in the crash. Helmet, Aerostitch Suit, Sidi Boots, Racer Gloves, and even my back protector was damaged.

I broke my left Tibia in two places, as well as my femur crushing the top of it. I now have a stainless steel plate and ten screws holding the top of my tibia together. The surgery went well and I am recovering. I have a seven inch incision left of center of my knee cap down my leg, another five inch incision just below that but further to the left of the first, and a small incision on just below the right side of my knee cap.

I also broke my left radius, up very close to my elbow. This was a very clean break and needed nothing to help heal, not even a cast. It should be fine in another 4 weeks (six total) and then I’ll be able to move to crutches from my walker.

The leg is also not in a cast, in fact the last few days (about 10 after the surgery) it’s open to the air, and is only pretty swollen, and can’t take any weight for another six weeks (eight total) and then light weight for another 4 after that. So if I’m lucky I’ll be walking by Christmas.

One of the worst parts of this is trying to sleep. The leg is very hard to find a comfortable position for, and I tend to be only able to sleep for 60-90 minutes at a time, before needing to change position. After about 6 hours in bed, I’m generally too fed up to try to sleep anymore, so I get up early and then end up napping during the day, since it’s much easier to sleep when actually exhausted.

I also have some bruised ribs, a sprained thumb, and a tweaked shoulder, all on the left side.

  1. Holy crap! I guess I read some of your earlier posts. Glad you’re still moving around…

Yes, moving around, just slowly. It’s frustrating, but it could have been so much worse, so I’m taking the good with the bad, and keeping my chin up as much as possible.

No brain or spinal injuries =)
      That’s a pretty big win.
